Light-footed progress in warmer weather

The trek goes on. Today the weather continued to be kind to us, though we did spot some clouds gathering on the horizon yesterday evening. This morning we set off in sunshine; it was only – 34 C. The sun is still very low in the sky, but the length of the day is increasing noticeably with every day that passes.

Also, the temperature has risen significantly, compared with that of a few days ago. As a result, while skiing we find ourselves getting up a sweat much sooner than before. On the other hand, during our hourly rest-breaks, as well as in camp, it's hard to notice much difference between – 47 C and -37 C. In fact, we would prefer it if the temperature would stay down at around -40 C for as long as possible.

Fortunately, we did not encounter really difficult pack-ice conditions today. On only a few occasions did we need to help each other over obstacles. Otherwise, the absolute distance traveled (4.7 km) was naturally hampered by our double-carry tactics; the actual distance skied doing this fetch-and-carry shuttle totaled almost 15 Km. In addition, since some of the team members are down with colds, we redistributed the pulkha loads so that the sick guys had less to pull.

All is well with the Expedition.
